GFCI and AFCI outlets, and where you need them

GFCI and AFCI outlets and breakers do quiet, important work. One guards against shocks, the other against fires. Older homes often do not have them where they should.

What a GFCI does

A GFCI shuts off power in a fraction of a second if it senses current going where it should not, like through a person. Code calls for them near water: kitchens, baths, laundry, garages and outdoors.

What an AFCI does

An AFCI watches for the kind of arcing a damaged or loose wire makes, which is a common cause of house fires. Code calls for them on most living-area circuits.

Older homes up here

Many rural homes were wired before these were required. Adding GFCI and AFCI protection is an affordable upgrade that makes an older home a lot safer.

Quick tips from our crew

  • GFCI guards against shock near water; AFCI guards against fires.
  • Kitchens, baths, garages and outdoor outlets should be GFCI.
  • Older homes can be upgraded without a full rewire.
