Garbage disposal do's and don'ts
A garbage disposal makes kitchen cleanup easy, until the wrong thing jams it or clogs the drain. A few simple habits keep it running for years.

What it can handle
Soft food scraps in small amounts, with plenty of cold water running. Cold water keeps grease firm so it washes through instead of coating the pipe.
Keep these out
Grease and oil, coffee grounds, eggshells, fibrous things like celery and corn husks, pasta and rice that swell, and anything that is not food. These cause most clogs and jams.
If it jams or hums
Turn it off first and never put your hand in. Most units have a reset button on the bottom and a slot for an offset wrench to free the motor. If that does not do it, give us a call.
Quick tips from our crew
- Run cold water before, during and after you use it.
- Keep grease, coffee grounds and fibrous scraps out.
- If it hums, shut it off and hit the reset button first.
